The Electric Car Conspiracy – Read This Before Buying One

January 27th, 2010 |

What’s with electric cars and why do you hear about them a lot? Some say it is great to own one and some say that it is a disaster to have one. So what is the truth behind owning an electric car? First, let’s discuss the top reasons why people buy electric cars.

The top reason is car emissions and pollution factor. Electric vehicles do not run on gas or diesel. They run on electricity. They do not have CO2 emissions. But is it true that they do not contribute to global warming? Let’s dig deeper.

It is true that these cars do not have emissions because they are running on electricity. But where does the electricity come from? The answer is power plants! And power plants burn coal or other fossil fuels to produce electricity. So driving an electric car is just like relocating your emission to the power plants instead of emitting CO2 on the streets. That’s basically the same amount of CO2 emitted into our atmosphere. Unless your energy is coming from solar energy, wind energy or some renewable and free source of energy, chances are that you are still contributing the same amount of pollution into the atmosphere.

An electric vehicle also causes more pollution than a traditional car. You might be wondering why. Let me explain. A traditional car is usually very efficiently designed in consuming fuel and converting it to energy. The gas is converted right in your engine. The only energy loss is from the heat and transmission of the energy into moving your car. On an electric vehicle, the fuel is not burned on site. It is burned somewhere in a power plant that is probably more than 10 miles away. The fuel’s energy is converted into electricity by a generator and transmitted through wires that span over several miles to reach your charging point. During the process of delivering electricity to your car, there is a big transmission loss; normally, this will range between 20-30% energy losses. This is truly unbelievable. The mainstream media only makes it look all green clean but intentionally does not explain the big picture.

So there you have it, I’ve presented the facts and truth behind electric vehicles, it is up to you to decide whether you want one or not.
