Solid Waste As Fuel Source?

May 16th, 2009 |

Being able to convert solid waste trash from the average business or household back into useful energy or materials without needing to separate waste would be a major improvement both environmentally and in terms of energy availability. Let’s go over the two most popular approaches to converting waste to fuel that are being developed today. These are plasma arc waste treatment and bio waste conversion.

The first, plasma arc waste treatment, is actually quite simple at heart. Two electrodes span a gap with high voltage electricity run through them. Into this gap an inert pressurized gas will be released and ignited with the flame shooting into a container holding the solid waste that will be converted. This waste reaches temperatures of up to 25,000 degrees F which is more than enough to atomize every single item in the container. This atomized matter takes the form of a gas which is collected and stored. Later the gas can be refined into useful fuels during further processing.

Another idea is to use biological sources, meaning bacteria, to break down solid waste into base components. Current experiments have shown that a bacteria could be used to turn solid waste into a handful of hydrocarbons with gasoline being one of them. This means that someday the trash you put out to the curb could be coming back to you at the gas pump.

Elimination of all waste while solving part of the energy crisis makes this technology one of the most important on the alternative fuels or renewable energy fronts. If current research continues at the pace it is going it will only be a few years before there is no more trash and everything is recycled.

    Hi Josh,

This is a great idea! We have a ton of solid waste that can potentially provide a huge amount of fuel and energy.

I like your site and I’ve added you to my blogroll.
