In today’s tough economy many business are looking for ways to save and conserve money. The things that are first to make it to the chopping block usually are marketing and promotions or positions that have been deemed unnecessary.

The effects of cutting advertising and marketing budgets may be a short term band aid for a companies financial woes ultimately this will only result in further loss revenue. Cutting the work force.. does not bode well for company moral either.

There is a much better way that is more times then not over is looked. Conducting a building energy audit can result in many thousands of dollars that would other wise be lost to be adding back into the company coffers. The card are however stacked against any company who is looking for this return.

Most companies will place the task of looking for the most cost effective energy rate in the hands of the controller. This can and often does lead to a very costly mistake. Simply put the controller has so much on his plate that he can not possibly be expected to be an energy expert.

The routine that happens time and time again is that the controller calls their current energy supplier and asks what the best rate they can qualify for. What most companies don’t realize is many states have now been deregulated. Deregulation simply means that other service providers are now able to offer energy to customers in areas that once only were represented by one supplier.

Currently the states that are deregulated are

Connecticut Delaware Illinois Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan New Hampshire New Jersey New York Pennsylvania Rhode Island Texas Ohio Washington

If you are looking to do a building energy audit in any of these states it is best to contact an energy auditor who has established relationships with all of the providers in your area.

Many of the providers offer different rates and the energy services provider will know who is offering the best rate. They also have the ability to create a “price war” between providers. Ultimately it should be the goal of any company to find a company that will service their energy needs for years to come. The do this by compare gas and electricity prices. This takes the pressure off of a controller to produce results on a very complicated subject.
