87 Thousand Terawatts of Renewable Sources Available Almost For Free Against 17 Very Expensive Ones

June 15th, 2009 |

87 Thousand terawatts (TW) is the amount of renewablesources with ZERO pollution that every year are freelyavailable and potentially exploitable on Planet Earth.

17 TW was the world’s energy consumption in2007 and as you know that wasn’t for free and theamount of pollution is not equal to zero.

For those of you that are not familiar with prefixes in the SI system, 1 tera is equivalent to a thousand billion (one trillion), 1,000,000,000,000.

87 thousand of those trillions wattsare free every year and can be easily used to produce electric energy for our daily needs. The systems we can use to produce renewable and clean energy are highly efficient hence very effective.

17 TW is what we have consumed in 2007,but only 5% was free meaning that 0.00085 terawatts out of this is produced by renewablesources. The remaining 95% is produced bynon-renewable sources that cost a lot, andnot only in terms of money! The systems we are currently using to producethis energy are very low efficient, very pollutingand expensive if not extremely expensive and forsome reason no one talks about it.

The world consumption is a mere fraction of theentire potential of renewable energy (you do themath) but still our energy is being produced usingnon-renewable sources.

It makes me mad when I think that with such apotential, still billions upon billions of dollars arewasted for drilling oil, mining coal, buildingnuclear power stations and other such stupidthings, and the list can go on and on, but we allknow what it’s going to cost us in the near future ifwe don’t do anything now.

oh my God, that is amazing resources for our energy. But how to use them?

I think it’s better speak about the prefixes as a powerof ten, beacouse a english trillion (10^12) it’s equal to a spanis billion.
